Across Genhawk, safeguarding isn’t just a policy—it’s a shared understanding and a daily commitment to creating a safe, supportive, and empowering environment.
This month, we’ve been speaking directly with service users to hear in their own words what safety means to them, how they feel supported, and what they would do if they or someone else were at risk.
The responses have been thoughtful, heartfelt, and full of insight, reflecting not only a clear understanding of safeguarding, but also how well supported and listened to our residents feel in their day-to-day lives.
When asked what safeguarding means, many described it in terms of kindness, protection, and the reassuring presence of staff and friends. One service user summed it up beautifully, describing safeguarding as being looked after like a bodyguard would. Others saw it as being protected from harm—whether that’s from people, unfamiliar situations, or simply feeling scared.
What really shone through was the strong sense of trust placed in the team at Genhawk. They spoke about staff keeping a watchful eye, always checking in to make sure they’re okay, and stepping in when something doesn’t feel right. Having their own space, such as the privacy of their own room, was also something that made them feel secure and comfortable—especially when combined with the consistent support of familiar, caring faces around them.
Service users also demonstrated an impressive understanding of what abuse is, with many able to describe the feelings it can cause—anger, fear, sadness—and the actions that constitute harm. Some even talked about the importance of speaking up, knowing who to go to, and how to report if something isn’t right. Whether that means telling a trusted staff member, a family member, or even the police, it was clear our residents feel empowered and supported to act.
Perhaps most heartening of all was how many knew exactly what to do if they or someone else was being hurt. There was no hesitation: speak up, tell someone, protect one another.
This exercise is part of our ongoing commitment to listening to our residents and making sure their voices are central to everything we do. Said Trish Patrickson, manager at Genhawk Limited. “Safeguarding is about more than rules and procedures—it’s about people feeling genuinely safe, respected, and understood. Hearing service users express that so clearly is both reassuring and inspiring.”
“At Genhawk, safeguarding is everyone’s business—and we’re proud to be a place where everyone feels safe but are actively involved in shaping the way we care.” Concluded Trish.
