A new year has a lovely way of giving everyone a fresh page. At Goldcrest House, we’ve been talking about what we want more of in the year ahead from the everyday habits that genuinely help us feel healthier, happier and more like us.

To kick things off we’ve been sharing our handwritten “My Goals” for the year ahead and it’s been a brilliant reminder that wellbeing isn’t one-size-fits-all. For some, it’s about moving more. For others, it’s about being kinder to themselves, trying something new, or simply getting out and about a little more often.

The goals shared so far have been wonderfully varied and full of personality. Alongside aims like doing more exercise, there has been more resolve to:

Do more writing (and improve handwriting too!)

Cook and bake more

Enjoy hobbies like colouring

Spend more time doing things they enjoy out and about in the community

Keep helping out at home and being a good friend to others

Build confidence with calmness: being more patient and staying calm

Make time for fun, including sports-inspired goals like football, and even going bowling

What we loved most is that these goals aren’t about pressure or perfection. They’re about feeling good, staying connected, and building routines that support both physical health and emotional wellbeing.

Daily walks are a simple, effective way to boost mood, build stamina and enjoy fresh air

Swimming twice a week provides a fantastic, fun, and low-impact exercise. Rock Fitness dance sessions once a week add the fun to movement with music, laughter and a real feel-good factor, and not forgetting trampolining twice a month, which always bring out big smiles and big energy.

Of course, wellbeing isn’t only about activity, it’s also about the food we eat and the routines we build around mealtimes. Positive changes to the house menu include a wider selection of healthier options, lighter meals, more balanced choices, and simple swaps that support energy levels and overall health.

Trish Patrickson, Manager at Genhawk said: “Our aim is to offer more supportive options, while respecting personal preferences. Whether someone wants to increase fitness, improve mobility, lift their mood, adjust their diet or just enjoy doing something active with friends, we’re providing the right environment to help make healthy habits part of everyday life.”

And here’s the part we’re especially excited about…

Goldcrest House has taken on a vegetable plot at Holland House, our sister home, where we’ll be growing our own fruit and vegetables to enjoy. It’s a brilliant step for wellbeing in more ways than one. Getting outdoors, learning and sharing skills, working together, and looking forward to the very best part: tasting the fruits (and vegetables!) of our labour.

At Goldcrest House, we’re approaching the new year with warmth, encouragement and realistic steps. Some goals are active. Some are creative. Some are about mindset, kindness, connection, and enjoying the everyday. And that’s exactly what wellbeing should be.

Here’s to a year of movement, laughter, fresh air, nourishing food, new routines and plenty of shared achievements along the way. We’re very much looking forward to a healthier, fitter us.
